How to Get to Napa Valley: Airports, Car Rental and Transit

Choose your arrival airport, then match the final journey to your accommodation and tasting plans.

  • Wine tastings and tours compared
  • Local meeting points explained
  • Practical valley transport advice

Choosing your route

Napa Valley lies north of San Francisco Bay. The journey does not finish at the airport: choose your destination in the valley before comparing ground transport. Napa, Yountville and Calistoga each make a different base, and a timetable to one town does not describe the final leg to every accommodation.

A car makes it easier to arrange stops across the valley, while buses and local shuttles can form part of a trip without one. For wine tastings, decide who will remain sober or arrange transport before booking. Compare the actual meeting point and return arrangements for each activity with the route to your accommodation.

Airports for Napa Valley

Oakland International Airport (OAK), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF) are options for a road journey to the valley. Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours from OAK, 1.5 to 3 hours from SFO and approximately 1.5 hours from SMF. Traffic affects the journey, particularly from OAK and SFO, so these are planning estimates rather than promises.

San Francisco airport and the city are different starting points. Check the address on a tour or transfer booking before allowing time to meet it. Napa County Airport is another local aviation facility. The county announced a seasonal public charter plan for 2026; check the current flight schedule directly when making plans rather than assuming a connection is available.

Taxi and transfer from Oakland Airport (OAK)

A taxi or prearranged driver can cover the road journey from OAK to your chosen valley address. When requesting a ride, specify the airport terminal, number of passengers and bags, destination and arrival time. Ask how the driver handles flight delays and where to meet after collecting luggage.

Confirm the complete quoted terms before booking, including waiting time and any additional charges. If the same driver will take you to tastings later, agree on the itinerary and return separately. A transfer from San Francisco city should not be assumed to start at either airport.

Car rental and parking

Collecting a rental car at OAK lets you continue directly to your chosen base and arrange the rest of the itinerary around individual appointments. Compare pickup and return locations, vehicle requirements and the terms of the rental before choosing a car. Allow time for collecting it after your flight.

Ask your accommodation about its parking arrangements and check parking at each planned stop. A car is useful for reaching separate destinations, but it does not change the need for a sober driver. Consider an organised outing on tasting days and arrange the return to your base in advance.

Ferry and onward bus

The ferry connects downtown San Francisco and Vallejo. A schedule effective from 9 March 2026 lists a crossing of approximately 60 minutes. Vallejo is a connection point, not the end of the journey into Napa Valley. Check the sailing and the onward bus separately for your date and direction.

Vine Route 11 connects Vallejo Ferry Terminal with Soscol Gateway Transit Center in Napa. Leave room between the boat and bus, particularly when arriving with luggage. From Napa, Route 10 serves the valley towns. Verify the final connection to your accommodation and keep a practical alternative in mind if the timetable leaves a long wait.

Getting around without a car

Vine Route 10 links Napa, Yountville and Calistoga throughout the week. Route 11 connects Napa and Vallejo, while Route 29 links El Cerrito del Norte BART with Napa via American Canyon from Monday to Saturday. Plan the BART portion separately and do not count on Route 29 on Sunday.

Local flexible shuttles also serve individual towns; check their operating days and booking procedures. A stop in a town may still leave a final journey to your lodging or appointment. Read the area guide alongside the timetable, and check fares and transfer conditions for the particular routes you intend to use.

San Francisco as a starting point

A day trip from the city can combine transport and tastings without making the airport your departure point. The organised outing shown here starts at a San Francisco city meeting point. Check the selected option for tasting inclusions and allow for lunch separately. It is an outing into wine country, not an airport transfer.

For a separate landmark guide, see Golden Gate Bridge. To compare the choices for a day in the valley, see day trips from San Francisco.
